From the driveway
Cold tyres, the figure on the door pillar, and why a loaded boot needs more PSI.
Check when the tyres are cold — before a drive or after the car has stood for a couple of hours. Use the pressures printed inside the driver's door pillar or fuel flap, not the maximum on the tyre wall. If you are loading up for a holiday, use the "full load" figure. Once a month is enough for most drivers.
Skip the kettle. Here is the quick, crack-free routine for frosty mornings.
Start the engine and set the blower to the screen. Spray de-icer from the top so it runs down, then scrape with the flat edge of the blade. Never pour hot water — a sudden temperature change can crack the glass. Clear every window and the lights, not just a porthole: the Highway Code says you must be able to see out.
Why rubber beats fabric from October to March, and how to trim mats for a neat fit.
Rubber mats with a raised lip hold water and grit instead of letting it soak into the carpet. Lay the mat in place, mark where it meets the seat runners, and trim along the moulded guide lines a little at a time. Make sure the driver's mat is clipped or sits flat so it can never ride up under the pedals.
Dim, yellowing light creeps up slowly. Three signs your bulbs are past their best.
If one side looks dimmer or more yellow than the other, or you find yourself using main beam more often on unlit roads, the bulbs are probably tired. Change them in pairs so both sides match. Hold new bulbs by the base — skin oil on the glass shortens their life — and check the beam alignment afterwards.
